Bhrigu Kamandal – Amarkantak

Bhrigu Kamandal is a small cave located in Amarkantak, situated near Dhuni Pani in Madhya Pradesh State.

It is a small cave that is said to be the place where Maharishi Bhrigu had meditated. He is one of the legendary seven Saptarishis of the Hindu religion. There is a small Shivlingam inside the cave that devotees can come and pray to. There is a large cubical stone called Kamandal of Rishi Bhrigu. There is a hole in this rock in the shape of a kamandal, in which the devotees pour out water by putting their hands even in the hot summer months and offer it to the revered Shivling nearby.

As per the locals, Bhrigu Rishi used to do penance at the place of Dhuni-Pani. It was difficult to burn fumes there during the rainy season. Then Bhrigu Rishi came to this place which is today called Bhrigu Kamandal, and a water crisis arose in front of him. It was on his prayer that Mother Narmada appeared in his kamandal. There is a tunnel here, which is called Bhrigu Bhrigu cave. Even today religious tourists and devotees enter the cave from one side and leave from the other side. During the rainy season, sage Bhrigu Dhuni used to do penance in this cave.
