Sri Ramalingeswara Swamy Temple - Natta Rameswaram

Natta Rameswaram temple is located in Natta Rameswaram Village, West Godavari District.

Natta Rameswara Swamy is the main deity of this temple and is an incarnation of Lord Shiva. Here Shiva lingam is installed by Jamadagni.

Lingam will be under the waters of river gostani for 10 months in a year and will be available for darshan only during summer for 2 months in Vaishaka Masam.

Three idols within this temple complex are Rama lingeswara, Lakshmana lingeswara, and Jamadagni installed a linga.

This temple was rebuilt in 1583 AD.

Only during the Telugu month of VAISAKHAM (i.e., in the middle of May/June) may pilgrims perform abhisheka and puja at the temple because it is submerged in Goastani water. The Saptakoteswara Linga will be submerged in Gostani waters for the remaining months. Lord Rama places a second Shiva Linga. As a result, Ramalingeswara Swamy was given to the temple. This Shiva Linga is known as Natta Rameswaram because it is built of shells and conches..

According to tradition, Rama placed the Linga here to remove the Dosha associated with killing the Brahmin Ravana. Rama arrived in West Godavari while returning to Ayodhya. As time was running out, he requested that Anjaneya bring the Siva Linga from Kailash. Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana then fashioned two Siva Lingas out of river sand and worshipped the idols. The name Natta Rama Lingeswara or Natta Rameswaram refers to the fact that these idols were made with seashells (Natta) inside of them.

Devotees congregate here on Maha Shivaratri day to take a dip in the Gosthani River.
